Mittens for Detroit
Posted By: Wendy Shepherd (July 9, 2019)
Mittens for Detroit collects, purchases, and distributes new mittens and gloves to children through adults in Detroit, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Dearborn, and other underserved nearby communities. Pairs are collected from October-January, all over Metro Detroit. Volunteers process the pairs in The Big Sort (Oct-March). Distribution is made through our partners - schools, senior centers, shelters, food pantries, medical facilities, veterans' groups, and the like. This winter is MFD's 10th Collection Season. MFD has collected and distributed 1/4-million pairs of new mittens and gloves since 2010. Even with that, the need outstrips the number of pairs donated each year.
Financial donations help to purchase the sizes that are least received in collections - mostly for teens and for adult men. MFD purchases new pairs at a huge discount through its partner, Broner Hat & Gloves (Auburn Hills). $1000 would fund about 145 warm pairs that would retail for $20 each!
