Blessings in a Backpack-Livonia

Posted By: Suzanne Baker (July 18, 2016)
Blessings in a Backpack-Livonia began in 2014, and provided its first backpacks of food to 47 students at Garfield Elementary in January 2015. As of May 2016, we also provide weekend meals to at-risk students at Rosedale, Kennedy, and Webster Elementary Schools, and Johnson Upper Elementary, for a total of 175 students. But in Livonia Public Schools, there are approximately 4,265 students eligible for free or reduced lunches, and many of these children donít receive sufficient meals on the weekend either. As a result, many students return to school on Mondays tired and hungry and are unable to concentrate or care about their studies. To feed a child weekend meals for the entire school year costs $100, so a grant of $1000 would feed 10 at-risk Livonia students for 2016-2017. We will add several new schools this year. NWCF is our fiscal sponsor. Check out our web page at http://biablivoni.org.
