Blessings in a Backpack-Wayne Westland

We are expanding the "Blessings in a Backpack" program to Hicks Elementary with the start of the school year. Each week, we will distribute backpacks filled with enough non-perishable food for the weekend to students that qualify on the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch program. We will also supply backpacks of food for school breaks. The goal of Blessings in a Backpack is to keep these students from going hungry on the weekends/school breaks, and remove barriers to academic success. Children struggle to concentrate and learn when they are hungry. If awarded, these funds would be used to purchase food for children in the Blessings in a Backpack program attending Wayne-Westland Community Schools. Feeding a child is a simple thing that can be taken for granted. But, for the families served by Blessings in a Backpack, a year’s backpacks of food can be life changing.
