Summer of Sharing Donation Helps Families Connect with Free Movie Nights

Community Financial’s 10th annual Summer of Sharing campaign is under way and thousands of
dollars have already been donated to local charitable organizations throughout Michigan!

Running through the end of August, Community Financial is donating $60,000 to organizations that make a difference in their communities. Recipients are chosen based on nominations submitted at SummerofSharing.org, where we ask you to consider, “What GOOD could you do with $1,000?” As we celebrate #10YearsofSharing, we’re excited to spotlight one such organization, Gaylord’s VFW Post 1518.

The VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) was founded over 100 years ago and currently has over 1.6 million members in 6,200 posts worldwide. One such post, in Gaylord, MI, began in 1925 and is quickly approaching its own centennial! The VFW is dedicated to veterans’ service, legislative advocacy, as well as military and community service programs. They promote patriotism, development of national veterans’ cemeteries, fund memorials, provide financial assistance and service to veterans and their families, and more.

The VFW Post 1518 shared that their $1,000 donation will help purchase outdoor movie equipment for their recently completed Veterans Community Park in Gaylord. The Post will then host free family movie nights, which is a new concept in the Gaylord community and will encourage families to enjoy the great outdoors. These outdoor events will support current social distancing recommendations from the Health Department, as attendees can easily space themselves 6 feet apart using their own lawn chairs or the provided picnic tables.

In the future, they hope to add a children’s Play Scape area, which will be handicap accessible. Additionally, they have plans to construct a permanent Post building that will adjoin the pavilion on the right side.

For more details about the pavilion, contact Mary Kay LeBourdais at (248) 561-5767. For more information about the VFW Post 1518 as a whole, visit their Official Webpage Here.

You are also invited to visit SummerOfSharing.org to learn more about how you can share your story and nominate a charity, community group, or school program that deserves a $1,000 donation. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to make a difference in your community and celebrate #10YearsofSharing!
