Blessings in a Backpack-Wayne Westland

Posted By: Cheryl Whitton (July 13, 2022)
Although hunger insecure students are eligible for free or reduced lunches during the school week, many of the children do not receive sufficient meals on the weekend. The unfortunate result is students return to school on Mondays tired and hungry.

“Blessings in a Backpack” provides school-age children with a bag containing food to provide six meals during the weekend. Backpacks contain such foods as tuna, chicken, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, oatmeal, fruit juices, granola bars, soup, fruit, and beef ravioli. This is a 100% volunteer group that gives of their time for this worthwhile program.

During the 2021-2022 school year we began sending food home to children attending Hicks Elementary. We would like to expand this program to a second elementary school in the Wayne Westland District. 67% of the students in Wayne Westland can benefit from this program. Please help us feed hungry children in your community.
