The'Friday Fill-up!'team at Trinity Episcopal Church started this outreach project to provide food kits to children in the Van Buren School District at high risk for weekend food insecurity. This program started with 20 children enrolled at Rawsonville Elementary in February 2018, and due to the great need in our community grew to serve at Tyler Elementary, bringing the total enrolled to 85!
Thanks to the tremendous support of our local civic organizations such as Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis as well as other grant funding, we are planning on expanding to Edgemont Elementary in the fall, making the total number of children served 130! Each child receives 6 meals, fruit, veggies, and 3-4 snacks per weekend. That's a lot of Mac-n-Cheese!
To date, the 'Friday Fill-up!'team has provided over 13,000 meals and well over 8,000 snacks!
Through this program, these schoolchildren know that their community respects, loves, and cares for them!
