Margaret Dunning & George Lawton Scholarships
Community Financial Scholarship Fund is pleased to administer two Scholarship Funds in honor of Margaret Dunning and George Lawton, two people who epitomize the credit union's "People Helping People" philosophy.
Margaret Dunning Scholarship Fund
The Margaret Dunning Scholarship was established to acknowledge Margaret Dunning for her 23 years of volunteer service as a member of Community Financial's Board of Directors. Ms. Dunning's years of enthusiastic volunteerism and altruistic contributions to the Plymouth Community make her a model for today's youth. Community Financial is pleased to offer scholarships in her honor.
Margaret Dunning Scholarships are awarded to needy students who demonstrate good character, a commitment to their community and a commendable academic record. Each year scholarships are awarded based on the qualifications of the applicants. 2008 will be the 20th year this scholarship has been offered.
George Lawton Memorial Scholarship Fund
The George Lawton Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of the credit union's General Manager of 29 years, George Lawton. Mr. Lawton is best remembered for his kind heart and unrelenting drive to help others. 2008 marks the 14th year for these scholarships.
Guidelines for Scholarship Consideration
Community Financial will be awarding 10 - $1,000 scholarships in April 2008. Applications can only be made online, after Dec. 1st, by going to http://scholarships.egrant.org. You will need to
create an account and login.
Once logged in read the guidelines for our "Community Financial Margaret Dunning and George Lawton
Scholarships." If you qualify, complete just one application; you will be considered for both
scholarships.
Submitting your online application is only part of the process.
You must also mail four copies of your COMPLETE application packet which consists of: a copy of:
- your online application
- a copy of your transcripts
- copies of your two letters of
recommendation.
The deadline for online applications and mailed materials TO BE IN OUR HANDS (not mailed by)
is Fri., March 7, 2008. Any information received after this date will automatically void the
application.
Scholarship Criteria:
1. The applicant must have a Community Financial account; persons eligible for membership are:
- Any person living, working, worshiping, going to school or volunteering within Community Financial's charter area including the communities of Plymouth, Canton, Northville and Novi and the counties of Alpena, Otsego and Montmorency in Northern Michigan.
- Any person who has a relative, through blood or marriage, who is a member.
- Any person currently living in the same residence with a person who is a member.
2. The applicant must be enrolled or anticipate enrollment in an accredited institution in a business, education, medical, finance, technical, industrial or skilled trade discipline.
3. The applicant must outline goals, aspirations, college and career plans in 250-500 words. Please attach to this application.
4. The applicant must be attending or have graduated from an accredited high school and provide transcripts for current and previous years.
5. Written recommendations from two present or former instructors and/or employers, dated within the last three months are required.
6. A history of work experience, including periods of employment, duties, earnings and performance awards or recognition by employer must be included with the application.
7. An outline of community and/or extracurricular involvement, including dates/years of involvement, must be included with this application.
8. Detailed financial need and resources must be included.
9. Applicants may be male or female, and of any ethnic or religious affiliation.
Four copies of the application packet, including all documents, are due Friday, March 7, 2008 and should be sent to:
